After completing his PhD in Pharmacology at Cambridge University Richard moved from academia to a course in traditional boatbuilding. He was foreman at Stirling and Son building and restoring classic wooden yachts and worked for Williams in Fowey building and repairing wooden and GRP boats including pilot gigs. He has designed and built a traditional wooden sailing dinghy; the Avocet. He moved from the Stirling and Son boatyard in Plymouth to run Treluggan Boatyard where he is in charge of the day to day running of the yard and also puts his practical skills to use when not in the office.
